Invented in the 1970's, Mindmapping was originally used mostly as a self development or project management tool. The immersion of new technologies, the quick evolution of our environment, of our way of working and thinking as well as the need to innovate have brought Mindmapping back to the front of the scene. It is a transversal tool which can be adopted by older generations and millenials alike.
Simple to use, to understand and very visual, Mindmapping gives an in depth and holistic view of an idea, concept, product, project, situation etc... in order to explore all the possibilities, but also identify hidden stakes, problems and solutions.
It naturally brings us to think "out of the box", it is energizing, easily shareable, fun and motivating.
In order to create new products and services, find solutions and innnovate it is crucial to overcome "functional fixity".
This means going beyond what we already know, beyond our usual perimeter and think in non-conventional ways in order to imagine state of the art, effective and truly differentiating concepts.
Mindmapping is the 1st step in creating this process. Supplementing it with other creativity tools is step 2...
Once we have intergrated how and why mindmapping works the 2nd step consists in associating it with other creative thinking tools:
de Bono 6 thinking hats: Used in groups, this is a systematic method of thinking and analyzing which enables every participant to explore different angles. Each category is identified with its own colored metaphorical "thinking hat." By switching "hats," participants can easily focus or redirect thoughts, the conversation, or the meeting.
The White Hat calls for information known or needed.
The Red Hat signifies feelings, hunches and intuition.
The Black Hat is judgment -- the devil's advocate or why something may not work.
The Yellow Hat symbolizes brightness and optimism.
The Green Hat focuses on creativity: the possibilities, alternatives and new ideas.
The Blue Hat is used to manage the thinking process
